Blinking, Lai smiled sweetly at him, his shuffling the cutest thing in the world to her. She was putting the batter into a pan and putting it in the oven, before he made it to her, arm outstretched like a nervous child. Smiling sweetly, Lai took the gift, the deep purple wrapping making her smile. Gingerly her delicate fingers picked at the tape, not really wanting to tear the paper away like she wanted to. moving the paper to the side, Lai’s eyes widened, her breathe caught in her throat. “What…” she breathed as she let the paper fall to her feet. It was a signed copy of the Nirvana album ‘Bleach’.
In silver scrawl, Lai traced a finger over Kurt Cobain’s signature, “Oh my…Lyle this is…” her voice was a wispy squeak as tears filled her wide eyes. She was just to grateful, and was a little embarrassed she was left as speechless at this. “Thank you, so much,” she blubbered out, wrapping her arms tightly around him, squeezing with all her might.
He grinned burying a hand in Alaizabel’s hair as he held her close, glad at least his gift had left her speechless. It had cost a good chunk of change but that didn’t matter to him, what mattered to him was her face upon seeing the album autographed by the three members of Nirvana. Lyle was giddy to see her like this, the same state that her gifts had left him in. “I’m glad you like it, took forever to find one that was actually signed by them” He chuckled into her hair his smile so wide it hurt.
In reality he’d sat quietly scrolling through website after website to find that album. So many of them were fakes, with names misspelled and everything. There were no record players in the apartment anymore, Evan’s had followed her to Liam’s. But Lyle doubt Alaizabel would really be interested in playing the record, and if she was he would go out and find a record player for her to use.

A grin that threatened to split her face in half dawned itself on Lai. She was so happy, so unbelievably happy he loved it. “It took me a while to make the notebook without you peering in every once in a while. I had to do it at night, and let me tell to, I was surprised it even looked this nice,” she giggled as she bounced on her tip toes, excited beyond belief. Her smile hurt her cheeks, but she didn’t care, he was happy with her, and with the gifts too. Blinking, Lai turned off the stove and made sure the food was burning, trying not to get too distracted by his shock.
“I was in a nasty fight with this man for that book, he was as adamant as I was to get it, I had to out bid him, and I am so glad I had enough for it,” she giggled, eyeing the worn green book, Lyle’s fingers delicately running over the pages. “It may not be in great reading condition, but I know how much you love him, and it just seemed,” her voice trailed off a bit, trying to find the right word. The smell of the foor made her hungry as she started to place the chicken on their plates, “It just really seemed appropriate to give the man I love with all my heart, the one thing I knew he’d love as much as I love him,” she smiled as she gave him a light kiss.
Lyle never intended to actually read from the book, he intended to keep it to himself and possibly erect and altar in honor of the book. Taking both books in hand Lyle wrapped an arm around her delicate shoulders and pulled her into his chest muttering several more thank yous as he peppered kisses all over her face. Without a word Lyle darted away into the living room, setting the books in the coffee table he picked up the slim gift wrapped neatly by Roy. He drummed his fingertips against the surface of it for a second or two, listening in on the last of Alaizabel’s cooking. He was nervous to give her this gift, he’d never been nervous to give someone a gift before. He liked the feeling.
Almost shuffling into the kitchen Lyle held the gift out to her, free hand shoved into his pocket. “I just hope that you like it, Roy had to wrap it for me” He admitted with a slight self deprecating laugh.

Lai looked over at him with a bright grin. He looked cute, sleepy but cute, mixing for her as she added the vegetables to the pan, making sure nothing was burned. Licking her lips, Lai cut some cheese and began to add that too, “It was decent, I mean all I did was watch a movie, and poke the puppies, but other than that,” She looked up at him with icy eyes, not really realizing that she did earnestly miss him. “I missed you, it’s weird not having you around,” she laughed, her cheeks feeling warm as she nibbled on her lip giving him a sweet smile. “Maybe you’re getting under my skin,” she added before wiping her hands clean.
Now was her chance to go, while the food didn’t need her attention, “Hey, keep an eye on this please, I need to get…something…” she said awkwardly before skipping away to their room. Lai dug under the bed, grabbing for his gift. It was wrapped in newspaper, a deep red fabric she tore from her dress as a ribbon. Nerves wracked her little form as she sighed, knowing he’d love it, but still nervous none the less. Peeking out, Lai gave him a huge smile. “So,” she giggled as she bound back to him, being as light on her feet as possible as she grabbed the bowl from him and placed the gift in his hand. “I’m poor so all I had was newspaper, but I am going to assume no matter what you’ll love it,”
Lyle stared at her oddly, she still referred to herself as poor and that confused him to no end. But Lyle made no comment on that, too tired to assure her that she had inadvertently married into money. He looked down at the newspaper wrapped gift, recognizing the pages from the paper that he read each morning as he slowly tugged the deep red ribbon away from it wondering vaguely what was inside of it. The paper made little to no noise as he pressed his fingers against the top of the gift and pulled a bit, it came away easily. The first thing he saw was an aged red leather bound notebook, it’s leather was soft under his fingers as Lyle set the half unwrapped gift on the counter carefully. His name was pressed into the material of the leather and Lyle smiled gently, this would be where he wrote about her. “It’s beautiful, Elvira” he mumbled as he set the notebook down with more care than it needed.
Picking the newspaper covered mass back up Lyle revealed the second and final gift, his eyes widened as he stared at the book of poetry. A first edition collection of Robert Frost’s works. He could think of no words as he gaped at the book, it smelled old, it was old. Slowly with a delicate touch Lyle opened the cover only to see the writing that was far too familiar to him, Robert Frost’s own messy scrawl. Shock was clear in his blue grey eyes as he looked up at his wife, more in love than he thought physically possible. “Elvira I…how did you…I…thank you” He rushed out fingers running slowly over the words written on the pages yellowed with age.

Giggling, Lai kissed him softly before pulling away from him ruefully. “I just thought it wasn’t fair that I had a ring, and you didn’t. I’m just glad it’s nice enough for you, I didn’t know if it were to plain or not,” she said truthfully as she walked over to the kitchen, washing her hands and starting the food. Cutting up the vegetables, Lai looked over at him, curled into himself. She wanted to go back already, and missed his warm embrace. Biting her lip, she tried to ignore the urge. “It should be done soon though, all that really needs to cook is the chicken,” she said sweetly, making the batter for the cake next.
“Maybe you can come help me?” he squeaked out, hoping he wasn’t too tired to come spend time with her. She tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear, gnawing on her lip a bit as she placed the chicken on the pan, hearing it sizzle slightly. Lai was well aware he couldn’t cook, and would probably mess something up, but she needed him to be preoccupied to go fetch the rest of her gift. “I could use someone to mix the batter,” she giggled softly, eyeing him a bit.
Lyle eyed her curiously for a moment before he sat up with a put upon grunt. Kicking his shoes off, loosening his tie, and untucking his shirt Lyle padded into the kitchen. Alaizabel’s gift sat wrapped in a deep violet paper on the coffee table, Lyle grinned to himself at the sight of it before he leaned against the counted bowl of cake batter in hand as he stirred it slowly. It smelled sweet, mixing easily with the smell of the chicken. Lyle thanked his lucky stars to have found someone that could cook much unlike himself. “So, how’d you spend your day?” He questioned raising a brow that was hidden below his shaggy blonde hair.
Lyle had no real interest in learning how to cook he’d just assumed it was a skill that he would never possess. But he was always willing to help Alaizabel, no matter how weary his body felt. The thought that his book may not be published still hung heavily over him, but he was finished with the book of prose so there wasn’t much he could do but wait at this point. Distracting himself by imagining just what Alaizabel’s face will look like when she opens her gift.

Lai was strangely glad to be curled next to him on the couch. He hadn’t bothered to change just yet, and they were supposed to go out for their anniversary. But to two of them just felt better at home. Cato and Paws were gone, and Lai was happy Kitty had won, and Lyle was home. Wiggling in his arms, Lai turned around to face him, her nose rubbing against his. “So I’m thinking something simple and healthy for dinner, like bruschetta,” she giggled into his lips, kissing them softly. He had just had the most stressful last few days, and all she wanted to do was pamper him senseless. “Does that sound good? I know it’s not chicken parm, but I’m getting tired of all the marinara,” she cooed a bit as she fluttered her eyes closed, taking him all in.
Her hands were balled into fits, taking the end of his blazer and toying with the hemming lightly. Lai had to admit that he looked so heartstoppingly good in a suit, and her lazing about in one of his shirts made her look bummy. Snuggling into him, she took in his fresh, clean, scent and sighed a bit. “Oh, maybe I can try that tiramisu recipe I found online too,” she giggled, nuzzling her nose to his again, eyes fluttering open. She was excited to give him the rest of his gift though, the wedding band she gave him at midnight was on his finger, and it made her giddy beyond belief.
Exhausted couldn’t begin to describe him at the moment. Every muscle in his body felt melted into both Alaizabel and the couch. He hadn’t even had enough energy to pull off his tie. He was balanced evenly between awake and asleep when Alaizabel’s voice roused him. Blinking sleepily he listen to her plans in the kitchen, he hummed softly in recognition nodding along slowly. Today had been a good day, a long day, but a good day. Ben was away for good and Lyle hoped that prison treated the bastard horribly, and now he got to spend their anniversary together during a storm. Tapping his fingers against her hip slightly Lyle mumbled “Sounds good to me, Elvira”.
Lazily he opened one eye gazing into the icy color of his wife’s eyes, a slight grin on his face. The suit was uncomfortable and he never wanted to wear a tie again but Lyle was content to lay as they were. “Thank you for the ring, again” He chuckled out looking down at the platinum band that now adorned his left ring finger. Somehow it solidified it in his mind, they were married, together forever.
